He unfolds his fingers from the receiver and it clatters into the cradle.
Had he ever really stopped waiting for this?
"Mike? What's wrong?"
"It's work." He can't meet her eyes. He thinks if he tried to say her name at this moment he couldn't push it past his lips. "I've got to go."
"Where? Now?"
"I'll call you from the airport." Keys, wallet, passport from the desk in the hall. From the closet, his jacket; and in the back, behind her winter coat, a bag packed two years ago. Just in case.
"Michael?"
But he's already out the door.

Sometimes we miss our chances. Chances are small, wily creatures, gifted with natural camouflage. They blend into the background; hide between the minutes of our lives. A chance is something we can walk right by and never know we missed until someone else comes up behind and takes it. Bereft, bewildered, we can only whisper, 'That could have been mine.'

Sometimes we miss our chances.

And sometimes we don't.

Cassandra shrugged. "My house. My rule."
"Whatever. How do you get cable down here anyway?"
"Shhh!" The familiar theme music had begun. Cass hummed along enthusiastically.
"How can you like this? The fighting's so... fake."
Cass answered her, the long-suffering teacher of a particularly slow pupil, "TV is fake, Stephanie."
Steph rolled her eyes and sighed. "I don't understand how you got so good at checkers."
With a feral smile, Cass replied, "I have many skills."
