Fic: DCU, Dick/Babs, untitled
Wrote this for
beckymarie, who's been wanting Obsidian Age fic forever (or, well, for two years). This is the best I could manage on a very boring day at the coffee shop. And heads up,
familyarchives! You might like this, too.
He stood in the corridor and faced the door of the World's Most Intimidating Conference Room, awaiting his cue.
Not that he was intimidated.
"Are you ready?" The voice in his ear was a comforting presence, even from thousands of miles away. She was probably the only person who could ask him that question right now in a way that he needed to hear.
"He apparently thought so."
"I didn't mean that way. Of course you're ready, and you know it. I just meant... are you ready?"
"Yeah. I think so. I sort of have to be, don't I? This is big stuff."
"The biggest. And you were the go-to guy on this. Remember that."
"Hard to forget." He did a quick breathing exercise to center himself, using her silent presence in his head as a focal point. He could hear the recorded voice still speaking from behind the door -- he resisted the phrase 'beyond the grave', but it did come to mind. "How's it going in there?" he asked, knowing she was observing.
"Once you go through that door, you'll know exactly what to do. He wouldn't have put you here for any other reason."
"I know. It's just... somewhere inside me there's a kid in a cape, and he's--"
"Wetting his pants?"
He smirked at the nearest security camera. "I was going to say 'a little overwhelmed', but that works, too."
"I know that kid. He'll be fine."
"You have no idea how he appreciates hearing that right now." Except, she probably did.
"Thirty seconds."
He instinctively shifted into a command stance. Their voices turned quiet, serious. "Wish me luck."
"You won't need it."
"Still nice to have, though."
"Good luck, then. And I'll be here, if you need me."
"That's nice to have, too."
"See you on the other side, Boy Wonder," she whispered. The doors slid open, and seven expectant faces turned to him.
"...Take it up with you field commander... Nightwing. He is the best. The only one I could have picked to lead you. He will honor you. He will make you champions.
"That's it. That's the speech. Get to work, Justice League. The world needs you."
